Chapter Eleven
The honeymoon fizzled out near the end. Devin, more enthusiastic than Jack expected one dark morning, had caused her husband to topple over and hit his head soundly on one of the end tables. She spent the whole flight home apologizing. Stephen’s demeanor had soured further. Jack’s excessive drinking created tension as he stumbled through the cabin, berating his assistant for not having the flight ready to go when they arrived at the airport. At a loss for words when Jack politely asked her to stop apologizing for what was clearly an accident in his mind, she stared out the window and watched the clouds below. With her mind elsewhere, the trip took no time flat. Hunger gnawed and her stomach rumbled as the plane taxied to a stop.
“I’m sorry, Devin. Where are my manners?” Jack winced as he shifted. His fingertips pressed against his forehead. “I have to go to the office, but Stephan can take you to lunch at the restaurant in my building. It’s the one where we had our first date.”
“And is there a reason you can’t have a working lunch at the office?” Devin crossed her legs and leaned back. “I promise not to touch anything.”
Jack sighed and glanced at Stephan. “With this headache, perhaps it’s for the best. Lunch in the office it is.”
“Surely you don’t want to bore her with that?” Stephan shook his head and downed his drink.
“Devin is an educated woman, Stephan. Correct, my dear?”
“Bachelor’s in accounting and business administration.” She blew a kiss to Stephan. “More than arm candy, sweetheart. The money is just better in my former line of work.”
“This banter is not helping my headache.” Jack pinched his nose.
“Sorry.” She stood and smoothed out her dress. “I’m famished and I’m not myself.”
She let Jack pass her on the way out of the plane. In a moment of pure immaturity, she stuck her tongue out at Stephan. He responded by making his fingers into a V and flicking his tongue between them.
“You’re impossible,” she muttered.
“Oh, I haven’t begun.” Stephan flourished his fingers for her to go first. “Scout’s honor I won’t push you down the stairs.”
“I highly doubt you were a Boy Scout.” She descended the steps. Jack waited for her at the bottom. He took her hand and led her to the limo waiting. Stephan joined them and the trip to the office remained silent. The ride up to his office in the elevator was also void of any conversation.
Stephan left the elevator first and Devin lingered with Jack for a moment. “Thank you, Jack.”
“For what?”
“I don’t mind being eye candy, but I can do something a little more useful in my life.” She smiled.
“Actually, I have just the thing, my dear.” His fingers laced in hers and he brought her down a long hallway. Many of the offices had large panes of glass instead of walls. The partitions between had pictures of not only Jack but some of his family members as well. She paused at the board of trustees, nearly tripping over her heels at the sight of a very familiar face.
